American Legion Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 is using its float in Saturday’s Park County Fair Parade to honor local veterans who served in the Korean War.
This year marks the 71st anniversary of the start of the Korean War, which began on June 25, 1950. The fighting officially ended on July 27, 1953 with the signing of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which drew the Military Demarcation Line and created a Demilitarized Zone separating North and South Korea.
In the decades since the war, the U.S. and the Republic of Korea have stood together as allies and economic partners for peace, security and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula and beyond.
Nearly 6 million Americans served during the Korean War era. The American Legion Hughes-Pittinger Post 26 of Powell has the following members who served: Helen and John Brandes, Donald Christiansen, James Connor, Thayer Cox, Paul Dahlstrom, Herbert Demoney, Don Easton, Robert Fontaine, Harlan Goodchild, Clarence Menning, Carl Mooers, Robert Neff, Thomas Riley, Paul Rodriquez, Eldon Schmitt, Wendy Troutman, Robert Wambeke and Robert Yorgason. Cox, Demoney and Wambeke plan to ride on the post’s float during the parade.
The post will also be hosting its fair week beer garden, with hamburgers, brats, chips and cookies offered from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. The beer garden will be located on the post’s lawn at 143 S. Clark St.
