Lander out of its depth against PHS wrestlers

The Lander Tigers were far short on ammunition in Friday’s wrestling dual against Powell High School in the Panther Gym.

The squad of PHS coach Nate Urbach took the never-in-doubt victory, 63-9.

The dual began at 145 pounds, where Panther Riley Bennett demonstrated Powell’s intentions by pinning Tiger Jake Denson with time remaining in period number one.

“Bennett,” said his coach, “did a good job starting us off.”

Seth Horton won by forfeit when Lander was open at 152 before Tiger junior John Whitley beat Powell freshman Lannon Brazelton 6-0.

At 170 pounds, it was top-ranked Bo Dearcorn of Powell versus No. 2 Jack Sweeney, but the much-anticipated showdown was brought up short when the referee disqualified Dearcorn for a flagrant violation.

Matt Seckman won for Powell at 182 when Lander sent no wrestler out to meet him, then both Carson Olsen (220) and Dallas Oliver (285) pinned Kaiden Newman and Ty Spiess, respectively.

“Carson Olsen showed some toughness coming back from injury to get the pin,” commented Urbach.

Returning to the top of the order, Colt Nicholson made quick work of Tiger Keegan Stephenson at 103 with a pin that took mere seconds.

By the time Powell’s 113-pound entry, Logan Werner, pinned Chad Snyder, the board read 42-9 Panthers.

Emma Karhu made it 45-9 with a hard-fought, 5-4 decision over Lander’s Charles Snyder at 120 that turned on a stirring third period takedown that provided the winning points and drew a roar of approval from her home fans. Karhu, who wrestles double-tough from the top, stymied Snyder the rest of way, refusing to give up a tying escape.

“Emma wrestled well,” said Urbach, and “avenged a loss [to Snyder] from the Lander tournament.”

Trevor Feller returned the Panthers to their pinning ways at 126, sticking Blaze Laird for another six points. Michael Maddox followed suit with a pin of Gabe Harris in the second period at 132 and Panther Corey Linebaugh won by fall over Conor Carey in the dual’s 138-pound and final match.

The Panthers’ final home appearance of the season is tonight (Tuesday) at 6 p.m. in a dual opposite the Broncs of Cody. On Friday, the team visits Cody for a 5 p.m. quadrangular.

The Class 3A West regional qualifying tournament follows on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22 at Mountain View. The state championships will wrap up the season on Feb. 28-29 at the Casper Events Center.
