The Powell High School junior varsity volleyball team had an excellent showing at last weekend’s Rawlins Invite, finishing fourth with a 3-2-1 record.

The Lady Panthers opened the tournament with a straight-set win over Big Piney (21-14, 21-6). Madi Fields led the team, serving five consecutive points with three aces.

Powell followed that with a tie against Torrington (15-21, 21-13), in which Beth Brazelton served six consecutive points with two aces. The Powell JV rounded out the day with a straight-set win over Newcastle (21-11, 21-11). The team’s play on Friday advanced Powell to Saturday’s Gold Bracket.

The Lady Panthers opened Saturday with a 2-0 win over host Rawlins, 21-16, 21-13; Abi Urbach played well on the net with three kills and two blocks.

Next up for Powell was a hard-fought, loss against Pinedale (24-22, 23-21).

“This was an extremely close match, with all girls playing well,” said PHS JV head coach Jodee Metzler. “Payton Wells stepped up as both setter and right side hitter — she did a great job in both of these positions.”

The coach added that, “Ashlyn Shorb played well both defensively and offensively with five attacks and numerous digs from the back.”

The loss to Pinedale dropped the Lady Panthers into the consolation championship against Lyman. Powell took the Lady Eagles to three sets before falling 2-1 (17-21, 21-8, 10-15).

“The girls had a long weekend and didn’t play to their potential in this game. We hope to meet them again when we are more fresh to play,” Metzler said. “I am impressed with the girls and their improvements. They play together well as a team and we are really focusing on covering the court and our hitters.”
