Kayla Kolpitcke a two-for-one bargain for Marian University

Posted

Marian University only has to provide one education to get two athletes in the person of Powell High School senior Kayla Kolpitcke.

Kolpitcke has signed letters of intent to compete in both ice hockey and soccer for the Sabres in Fond du Loc, Wisconsin. Hockey in winter and soccer during the spring will be Kolpitcke’s new normal at the four-year university.

Now in her 10th year as a goalie on the ice, she said hockey appeals to her because she likes the competition and competitiveness of the sport. The “feel is just different” for hockey than any other sport, Kolpitcke said.

In soccer, she’s been a forward or midfielder the past seven or eight years.

Her favorite sport? With a sheepish grin she admits it’s hockey.

How does a young woman from Powell in far northwest Wyoming come to the attention of a university in far-off Wisconsin? Because she sought Marian out, that’s how.

“I had a list of NCAA Division III schools that had hockey for women and filled out the applications online,” Kolpitcke explained. “Marian got back to me” and the deal was struck.

As a collegian, Kolpitcke plans to pursue a career as a nurse specializing in allergies — the very affliction that bedevils her personally.

She reports for pre-season soccer drills Aug. 18.
