JV girls start season in Buffalo

Playing at the East-West Classic in Buffalo last weekend, the Powell High School girls junior varsity basketball team had some strong moments but dropped their two games.

Buffalo 63, Powell JV 31

Opening the season on Friday, the PHS JV came up short against the hosting Bison, 63-31.

“This was a very typical first JV game in terms of the players trying to figure out their new teammates and for many of them the level of play,” said JV coach Troy Hildebrand. “Add in that many of them are working into new positions within a new system and we just didn’t execute very well on either end of the floor.”

“The girls definitely put their best effort forward and we had sparks of brilliance but we just weren’t able to sustain them long enough to compete with a strong Buffalo team,” Hildebrand added.

Rylynn Valdez and Rose Graft each scored eight points apiece to lead the team. Jayden Asher had six points as part of “a great weekend for us with tremendous effort and defense,” the coach said. Abi Urbach added four points while playing a new position, Hailee Hyde chipped in three points during her two quarters of work and Paije Johnson added two.

Douglas 47, Powell JV 35

After getting out the first-game jitters, Hildebrand saw his squad take “a great step forward” on Saturday against Douglas. He praised the team’s communication and improved defense and rebounding.

The Panther girls gave the Bearcats all they could handle in the first three quarters, with PHS trailing just 34-31 going into the final period.

Paije Johnson “really stepped up in her two quarters of work, scoring 12 points and creating a number of steals,” Hildebrand said. Graft added eight points, while Sarah Dunkerly “stepped up big for us in the post, adding five points and playing strong defense.” Taking on the new role of point guard, Kaili Wisniewski added four points and “did an excellent job all weekend of getting us into our transition game and our half court offense,” the coach said.

Addison Braten, meanwhile, “was a bright spot in the post for us,” he said, rebounding well and scoring three points. Urbach added three points as well, while Gabby Thomas “came off the bench for us with great energy and created some real havoc on the defensive end,” Hildebrand said.
