Judge facilitates ‘The Wizard of Oz’-themed trial

Posted

In celebration of Law Day, fifth grade students across Wyoming participated in events that gave them firsthand experience in the judicial process. Fifth Judicial District Court Judge Bobbi Overfield helped organize and facilitate one educational activity in Thermopolis.

At the Hot Springs County Courthouse, Thermopolis Middle School fifth graders conducted a mock trial that centered on Dorothy’s plight within “The Wizard of Oz.” Dorothy was charged with theft and involvement in the death of the Wicked Witch of the West, and students assumed roles as judges, attorneys, witnesses and jurors.

In a news release, the Wyoming Judicial Branch said Overfield’s involvement with the event showed “dedication to fostering an informed and engaged citizenry from a young age.”

Law Day is held annually on May 1. According to the U.S. Courts, the national day was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 “to celebrate the rule of law in a free society.”
