I promise to lower taxes

Hurray for election season! For months on end, we get to see wall-to-wall coverage of just how bad everyone running for office is; if you are not careful you’ll begin to think that there are no honest politicians … One thing is consistent in every ad that you will see, their guy if elected will destroy every freedom you have, while our guy will preserve your freedom, lower your taxes and mow your lawn!

You know what rarely happens? Lower taxes or the promises made are kept to any degree; they’re usually disappointments all the way around. But such is life down here, disappointments all the way around to some extent or another because all things in this fallen world will leave you wanting just a bit more. This is not the case with Christ, however!

In Christ, we have a rest for our souls according to the author of Hebrews. This same author will go on to tell us that Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith. If we follow after Jesus Christ the righteous, we will not be disappointed as he is the finisher and perfector of our faith, he is the one who pulls us through and Jesus is the one who makes good on his promises.

No amount of worry or seeming failure here will dampen what God has prepared for those in Christ Jesus. So while things are dim here, they are eternally bright in heaven as God and Jesus are the light of that faraway land. The promises of its ruler, unlike the rulers and politicians here, always deliver on his promises.

All the promises of God are yes and amen in Jesus. So, while we participate in the political process here and tolerate those who would make grandiose promises but fail to deliver the vast majority of the time, we can have this confidence and in the king of kings we can rest knowing that he will deliver on what he has proclaimed. That is eternal life through the shed blood of Christ for all those who would come to him in repentance and faith.
