Travels to conference in Lander

Heading over the mountain for the first time this season the Powell Panthers golf team got to experience the Kendrick Golf Course at the Sheridan Invitational on Friday.

“We continued with our very consistent play from this fall with a 367 total,” Panther golf coach Troy Hildebrand said. “We have changed our lineup a couple of times, but lately we have been right around 365 with each team round.”

Leading the way for the Panthers was junior Gunnar Erickson, who tied for 10th place after shooting an 89.

Hildebrand said Erickson started on the difficult back nine holes first, shooting a 47 before putting together a strong front nine to keep his score below 90.

One stroke behind Erickson was junior Will Jackson, who bounced back from a poor round the week before in Lovell to shoot a 90.

“Will [Jackson] bounced back from a tough day in Lovell to get much closer to where he had been earlier this season,” Hildebrand said. “He really played a solid round on a course he had never seen.”

Sophomore Trey Scott continued his bounce back play after an early season injury, finishing with a 91.

Hildebrand said Scott had the opportunity to break into the 80’s, but a difficult final hole forced him to come up short.

Sophomore Jackson Hill continued his strong fall campaign in his second year, finishing with a 93 in Sheridan.

“Jackson [Hill] played a lot of golf this summer and he has put together an excellent fall so far,” Hildebrand said. “He has been a solid contributor for our varsity team. He seems to be growing as a player each week.”

Junior Andrew Jones finished one stroke behind Hill, coming in with a 94.

Hildebrand said Jones has made positive strides by eliminating really big numbers from his round, and still has room to improve moving forward.

Another junior, Parker Williams, finished with a 97 and continues his improvement after shooting around 100 in nearly every event this year.

Junior Isaiah Woyak finished with a 104 in Sheridan, but Hildebrand hopes he will bounce back in Lander this weekend.

“Isaiah [Woyak] had a nice round going but unfortunately had a rough finish,” Hildebrand said. “He still has plenty of positives from Sheridan, and will be looking to make a good run in Lander at conference to get his season back on track.”

Senior Seth Siebert rounded out the Panthers roster for the day, finishing with a 109.

Overall the Panthers finished sixth out of six as a team, but all teams in attendance finished within 27 strokes of each other — with host Sheridan taking the victory with a 340 team score.

For the girls, freshman Coy Erickson continued her improving play — carding a 115 on the day.

“Coy [Erickson] was another player seeing the Sheridan course for the first time and she stepped up and played very well,” Hildebrand said. “She had three pars on the day and continues to improve her course management each week. It has been fun to watch her growth.”

The Panther’s season is quickly coming to an end, as they head to Lander to take part in the 3A West Conference Tournament Thursday (today) and Friday.

This tournament will determine which five Panthers will take part in the scoring for the Panthers at the 3A State Tournament next week in Buffalo, with all eight varsity players vying for each spot.

Coy Erickson will be participating in both tournaments to represent the Panthers on the girls’ side.

The conference tournament is set to tee off at 11 a.m. Thursday, and again at 9 a.m. on Friday.

“Hopefully we can find a way to chip about 6-10 shots off of our total at conference and state the next couple of weeks to wrap up our season,” Hildebrand said.
