A familiar setting helped the Powell Middle School girls’ track teams get off to a strong start on Saturday. A home meet at the high school pushed the seventh grade girls to a third place finish and the eighth grade girls to a second place finish.

Among the seventh graders, Ashlee Jacobsen took second in the 400 meters with a time of 1:10.30, Karee Cooley placed second in the 1600 with a time of 5:53.44 and third in the 400 with a time of 1:10.89, Montana Mixon placed second in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 2 inches, Leah Graham placed third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 20.70 and placed third in the discus with a throw of 63 feet, 6 inches.

The eighth graders, meanwhile, picked up several victories. Merritt placed second in the 1600 with a time of 6:10.21, Torres placed second in the discus with a throw of 73 feet, 9 inches, Kadence Knuth placed third in the 200 with a time of 30.43, Johnson placed third in the 800 with a time of 2:54.08, Hayden Watts placed third in the 200 meter hurdles with a time of 35.47 and Josie Werner took third in the long jump with a leap of 12 feet, 6 inches.

The team of Josie Werner, Merritt, Jordan and Johnson won the 4x400 relay with a time of 4:42.43.

“Anai [Torres] in the throws and Audrey [Johnson] in the running events helped paced the eighth grade Cubs,” Cubs head coach Zach Coombs said. “Leah [Graham] was a powerhouse for the seventh grade Cubs placing in all of her events.”

The Cubs will hit the road for the second meet of the season, as they head to Riverton on Saturday at 9 a.m.

“I am looking forward to seeing how the Cubs compete against Riverton, Lander, and Mountain View,” Coombs said. “We have not seen these teams this year so it will be nice to see where we stand.”
