A longtime trooper with the Montana and Wyoming highway patrols has joined the Park County Sheriff’s Office as a detention deputy.

Allen Cooper joined the sheriff’s office earlier this month and will serve as an officer in the Park County Detention Center, helping to oversee inmates at the Cody facility.

Cooper is originally from Mississippi, but moved to Montana in 1992; he obtained a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Montana State University.

He served with the Montana Highway Patrol from 1997 to 2001 and then with the Wyoming Highway Patrol from 2001 to 2011.

The sheriff’s office announced his hiring in a Monday Facebook post.

A resident of Cody, Cooper has a 14-year-old son and a 12-year-old daughter.
