First lady’s Yellowstone trip canceled amid poor weather

Thanks to a fall snowstorm, First Lady Melania Trump won’t be visiting Yellowstone National Park today.

After spending Thursday in Jackson, Trump was scheduled to travel to Grand Teton National Park on Friday morning, before heading to Old Faithful and the Grand Prismatic Spring with U.S. Secretary of the Interior David Bernhardt around midday.

However, after reporters checked in at Old Faithful mid-Friday morning in preparation for the first lady’s visit, they were told she wouldn’t be coming to Yellowstone. Amid snowy conditions, there were concerns that the first lady’s jet would be unable to get off the ground at the West Yellowstone, Montana, airport, reporters were told; Trump had been scheduled to depart from the airport on Friday afternoon.

She flew into the Jackson Hole Airport on Thursday, meeting area Boy Scouts in the town square and exploring the Snake River with fourth graders.

“A great first day in [Wyoming],” Melania Trump tweeted Thursday evening, alongside photos of her activities.

In addition to visiting two of America’s most iconic national parks, the first lady’s two-day Wyoming trip was also scheduled as a way to promote her “BE BEST” initiative and to encourage youth to get out in nature, the White House said.
