Finding roots in Powell

Posted

Dear Editor:

My husband and I were in Powell a few weeks ago. My parents had lived in Powell shortly after they married in 1946-47. They had to move back to Mississippi due to family illness. They loved Powell and always spoke about it with fond memories.

It has been my hope to be able to visit Powell and try to find out some information about where they lived and worked during this time.

I went first to the Powell Library where the kind and knowledgeable staff helped me find where my parents had rented a one-room basement apartment. Finding where they lived was a dream come true for me.

Next, I visited the Homesteader Museum. With the help of the director, I was able to find the approximate location where my mother had worked as a bookkeeper and also where my father worked in the South Elk Basin.

The staff members of the library and the museum are true treasures to your town. Powell is lovely and I thank these special people for helping me and making my hope and dream come to fruition.

Sincerely,

Julie Fowlkes Clayborne

Belden, Mississippi
