FFA competes in Border Wars and District Speech

Powell-Shoshone FFA had a busy week, attended Border Wars in Sheridan on Monday, March 7 and District Speech in Thermopolis on Tuesday, March 8.

“Border Wars is a competition that Montana teams and Wyoming teams compete over in Sheridan,” Powell High School senior Jace Nordeen explained. “It’s just like the border wars at college, where it’s Colorado and Wyoming playing football.”

Eleven PHS students attended Border Wars: sophomores Victoria Beaudry, Kathryn Brence, Baylee Brence, Charlee Brence, Cassidy Reimer, Shelby Carter and Virginia Lohr, juniors Katie Beavers, Abby Wambeke and Lilly Morrison and senior Nordeen.

The competition was made up of three events: environmental and natural resources, ag sales, vet science and farm business management.

The farm business team placed fourth overall, environmental and natural resources placed fifth overall and vet sciences placed 12th overall. Nordeen placed first in wildlife identification and 10th overall.

Baylee Brence was the only member of the chapter to attend District Speech. Baylee will go on to Regional Speech in Thermopolis on Thursday. Placing is not tracked during District Speech, but the top three move on to Regional Speech.

“The first one is always super nerve-racking,” Baylee Brence said of Border Wars and District Speech. “I guess that’s what I’ve been told, and after the first one, you have more time to prepare, you know what to expect and what you need to improve upon.”
