Eighth grade girls off to a strong start

Winter sports have kicked off at Powell Middle School, and the eighth-grade girls’ basketball teams have flourished thus far. The A team is 5-0, while the B team is 3-2.

Head coach Dale Estes said he’s been impressed with how well the teams have jelled in the early season.

“This group of girls is so unselfish almost to a fault,” Estes said. “They play great team ball.”

The A team most recently knocked off Cody 31-20 for its fifth win. Its largest margin of victory came on Oct. 31, when the Cubs defeated Lander 39-3, allowing just one point in the first half.

For the B team, its most impressive win of the year so far came in the season opener, with the Cubs outscoring Riverton 10-0 in the fourth quarter to seal a 24-17 win.

Saige Kidd’s 13 points against Riverton is the A team’s highest single-game point total, while Ava Stearns’ eight points against Riverton is the B team’s highest.

In addition to both teams having winning records, the girls’ eagerness to learn has stood out to Estes.

“What has impressed me the most is that they are very
coachable, have good court sense, and work extremely hard,” the coach said.

The Cubs faced Lovell on Monday evening at home. They also play a handful of other games against Burlington, Cody, Worland and Thermopolis later in the week.

As the season goes on, Estes hopes to sharpen a few specific areas to improve his squad.

“We need to continue to work on the details of our offense, defensive skills, and fine tuning our transition game,” Estes said. “They are a fun group to watch!”
