Dry numbers shown in last snow water update

The last snow water equivalent update for the year was released this week and shows the statewide snowpack at 58% of median, down 4 percentage points from one week ago.

One year ago the state median was 62%, down from the 126% median at the same time in 2019.

The Tongue watershed has the highest snow water equivalent (SWE) in the state, at 120% — down from 140% last week and 85% a year ago. 

The Wind River Basin is at 104% of median — up from 103% a week ago and up signifigantly from the 52% registered one year ago.

The Belle Fourche and Cheyenne basins are considered melted out, as is the South Platte and Lower North Platte basins.

The Yellowstone drainage is at 71% of median, down 3% from the prior week and also down from 119% of median from the same date one year ago.

The Shoshone River basin is at 56%, down from 59% last week and also down from 91% a year ago. The Bighorn River basin is at 93%, down from 109% last week, but up from 92% last year.

The Wind, Sweetwater, Upper and Lower Green and the Upper Bear basins showed an increase from last week.

The Sweetwater is at 95% (up from 75 %); The Upper North Platte is at 75%, down from 78% last week; the Laramie is at 103%, but down from 105% a week ago; the Little Snake at 58%, down from 66% last week;  the Upper Green is at 67%, up from 59% last week; the Lower Green is at 56%, up from 50% a week ago; the Upper Bear is at 36% but up from 31% a week ago. 

Snowmelt will be active below 9,500 feet by midweek as temperatures climb.
