Cub girls’ soccer short season ends 4-1-1

The month-long Cub girls’ club soccer season came to a close on Tuesday as the girls  finished their season with a 4-1-1 record.

Over the last two weeks, the Cubs went on the road and defeated Worland 4-0, lost to Riverton 4-3, beat Buffalo 5-2 and tied Riverton 3-3 at home with the last kick of the game.

Over those four games, Ivy Agee was the Cubs’ leading scorer, but Coy Erickson, Star Gonzales and Meisja McCrary all contributed goals in the games.

In their final game, the Cubs faced a tough Riverton team that has been undefeated as a middle school program for the last two years.

The wind was a factor early on as the Cubs trailed 3-1 at halftime.

A second half in which Agee scored from a corner kick and a penalty kick with the last touch of the game gave the Cubs a 3-3 draw.

The six goals the Cubs scored against Riverton are the only six goals that Riverton has conceded in the past two seasons.

“The greatest improvement I saw in the team – and it’s one that any coach is blessed to have happen when it does –  is the ladies all began to believe in themselves and consider themselves capable of winning,” Cub girls’ coach Callee Erickson said.

Erickson said the team was scored on first in games but fought back in order to get either wins or ties in almost every game.

She said the team continued to improve, and the back line of Rien Robson, Ava Brewer, Patricia Christensen and Hagen Bradish came together for their best game of the season Tuesday.

Erickson said she hopes the girls remember that talent is great to have, but the team that works harder than everyone else is the one that wins championships.

“We are very proud of the ladies. They all work hard and are respectful and willing to learn,” the coach said. “They are a special group, and we hope they continue to do well in the coming years.”
