Powell cross country ventured to Buffalo for its second meet of the 2020 season on Saturday.
With temperatures in the high 90s, difficult conditions were on hand for the runners. And all things considered, head coach Ashley Hildebrand is pleased with her teams’ performances.
“We had a really hot day in Buffalo,” Hildebrand said. “There was no shade on the course, and the weather made for some really tough racing conditions, but our team ran well.”
For the girls, Kabrie Cannon logged the best time (22:27.61) and took seventh place individually, helping Powell finish in fourth place in the afternoon session. Mary Shopa and Madelyn Horton also finished in the top 30, at 28th and 29th, respectively.
The boys’ team finished fifth place in the event, with a team score of 94. Four PHS runners — Joey Hernandez, Daniel Merritt, Chance Franks and Lane Franks — finished in the top 20 at 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th, respectively. Riley Schiller came in 28th for the Panthers’ No. 5 runner.
While the Panthers weren’t at the top of the standings in either competition, Hildebrand continues to see growth from her teams.
“They are running really well as a group and constantly push each other in practice,” Hildebrand said.
Powell cross country competes again today (Thursday) in a Riverton meet.
