The number of people infected with COVID-19 in Park County continues to rise.
As of Wednesday, there were 214 confirmed and probable active cases of the disease within the county, up from 160 such cases a week earlier.
Additionally, 17 people were hospitalized with COVID-19 at county facilities on Tuesday — again tying the pandemic peak. That included 10 patients at Cody Regional Health and seven others at Powell Valley Healthcare. Across the state, there were 230 people hospitalized with COVID-19 on Tuesday, approaching the state’s pandemic peak of 247 hospitalizations.
“Wyoming’s healthcare system and healthcare workers, in every community, are feeling the strain of this surge,” Gov. Mark Gordon said in a Wednesday statement. “We need to recognize our healthcare workers’ commitment to caring for our neighbors during the pandemic. They are working extra-long hours and at times having to cover for sick colleagues.”
Gordon announced that he’s making $30 million of federal funding available to help healthcare facilities address staffing shortages, provide hazard pay, strengthen recruitment efforts and secure traveling medical staff.
He also pointed to data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) showing that those who are fully vaccinated “have a dramatically reduced risk of requiring hospitalization for a coronavirus infection.” On Sunday, Park County Health Officer Dr. Aaron Billin shared a CDC infographic saying unvaccinated people are 17 times more likely to be hospitalized due to COVID-19.
As of Tuesday, roughly 36.8% of Park County’s population — or 10,734 people — had been vaccinated. The Wyoming Department of Health has tied the deaths of 41 Park County residents to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, coming among 3,665 confirmed and probable cases of the disease.
