Cody teen dies after ATV crashes into canal

A 13-year-old Cody boy died on Sunday afternoon after crashing into a canal on an ATV.

Grayson Henry was about to begin his eighth grade year at Cody Middle School.

The three-wheeler accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Lane 19H, roughly 7 miles northeast of Cody.

Emergency personnel from the Park County Sheriff’s Office, Cody Regional Health, Cody Fire Department and Park County Search and Rescue all responded to the scene and got Henry out of the canal. However, he was later pronounced dead at West Park Hospital, the sheriff’s office said in a news release Wednesday.

An obituary for Henry composed by his family described the boy as someone who proudly “lived the cowboy and farmer way of life” and “enjoyed helping neighbors with any physical work that needed done.” He played mandolin and guitar — a black one, like Johnny Cash — favored country music and took great pride in a 1982 Ford F-150 that he purchased from great-grandparents, the obituary says.

“Grayson took pride in bringing happiness to others,” family members wrote. “Please always remember his contagious smile, healing hugs and firm direct handshake.”

A Grayson Henry memorial fund has been set up “to help this amazing family get through this tough time,” Sarah Robson Hoopes wrote in a Facebook post.

Donations are being accepted at Big Horn Federal Savings, she said, and checks can be sent to Ballard Funeral Home, P.O. Box 2136, Cody, WY, 82414.

“Grayson was kind hearted, caring and such a special, confident young man,” Hoopes wrote. “Please pray for their family!”

A memorial service for Henry is set for Thursday afternoon at Ballard Funeral Home.

The teenager is the second person to die in a Heart Mountain area canal this year. A 50-year-old Cody man, Michael A. Shotts, died in the canal in early May after apparently falling into the water near Rattlesnake Mountain.
