Cody High School senior Kinley Bollinger has been named the second place winner in the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) national 2021-22 Voice of Democracy scholarship program.

Bollinger also received the $16,000 Charles Kuralt Memorial Scholarship award.

The Cody-based VFW Post 2673 and its auxiliary sponsored Bollinger, who lives west of Ralston.

The announcement was made during a virtual Parade of Winners ceremony hosted live on Facebook, sponsored by Twisted X.

“While we weren’t able to meet in person again this year, we didn’t let that stop us from celebrating these students’ impressive accomplishments,” said VFW National Commander Fritz Mihelcic. The April 7 event “successfully shined the spotlight on all of our VFW Department (state) winners across the nation,” Mihelcic said.

In total, the VFW presented America’s top high school students with more than $211,000 in scholarships and awards, bringing this year’s grand total to more than $3.4 million presented at the national, state and local levels of the youth essay competitions.

Open to eligible high school students in grades nine through 12, the VFW’s annual Voice of Democracy audio-essay program requires entrants to write and record a three- to five-minute script on a democratic, patriotic theme. This year, nearly 25,000 high school students from around the world submitted essays, with 53 advancing to compete at the national level.
