Child finds marijuana at Powell High School; teen cited

A young child stumbled upon a small baggie of marijuana while attending a basketball game at Powell High School Friday night.

The child brought the baggie to a school resource officer around 7 p.m., after spotting it in the PHS Commons area outside the gym.

“The 6-year-old just said, ‘I found this ... and I thought you might want it,’” said Powell Police Chief Roy Eckerdt.

Officer Trevor Carpenter concluded that the gram of green leafy material in the bag was marijuana, then reviewed surveillance video footage from the commons area. The officer identified a 15-year-old PHS student as a suspect and the teen allegedly admitted that the illegal substance was his.

“According to the juvenile, he believed it fell out of his pocket,” Eckerdt said.

The student was issued a misdemeanor citation for possessing a controlled substance, the chief said. It will be up to the Park County Attorney’s Office and a Single Point of Entry group to decide whether the juvenile’s citation is handled in an adult court or elsewhere.

Friday’s incident was the department’s first call of the school year involving marijuana, Eckerdt said, adding that nicotine has been a more consistent problem in the Powell school system.

“The biggest challenge we’ve been facing, both at the high school and middle school, is the JUULs, the vaping devices,” the chief said.
