Celebrate National Reading month with Park County Library

March is National Reading Month and there isn’t a better way to celebrate than to visit the library. Park County Libraries have fun things happening at all of the libraries.

March kicked off with Read Across America which was celebrated March 2, on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Powell Library had a special visit from The Cat in The Hat along with a fun storytime.

Park County Libraries are pleased to offer Overdrive which offers patrons access to a vast catalog of audiobooks, e-books and digital magazines all at your fingertips. All you need to do is download the Libby app and have your library card. If you need assistance and would like more information, just give the Powell Library a call or stop by and we would be happy to help.

With St. Patrick’s Day also on the horizon, Park County Libraries are doing a fun countywide event called SpudFest. We are encouraging library staff and patrons to decorate potatoes as one or more characters from a book. There is no sign-up necessary. If you don’t have potatoes at home, your libraries will happily provide one for you. Participants are encouraged to be creative, have fun and bring their potato creations to one of our library branches, to put on our special SpudFest displays by Wednesday, March 17.

Park County Library is holding a chess tournament at the Cody Library from 9:30 a.m.-4:30  p.m. on Saturday, March 20, for players of all ages. Lunch is provided and masks are required. Players can sign up the morning of the tournament at 9 a.m. or before. Please call the teen room at 307-527-1884 for more information.

Powell Library will hold a book club at

2 p.m. on Thursday, March 11, in the Powell Library Meeting Room to discuss the book Red at the Bone by Jacqueline Woodson. Just stop by or call the Powell Library to get your copy of the book.

The Powell Library children’s librarian has started 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten. This program encourages early literacy to prepare children for reading readiness in kindergarten. The goal is to read 1,000 books to a child before they are ready for kindergarten. Just stop by the Powell Library and sign up; your child gets to pick out an animal to put their name on, hang on our tracker wall and earn incentives as you read to them. This is a fun and simple way to instill the love of reading at a young age.

Powell Library Storytime is offered at 10:30 a.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Please sign up for your spot to attend.

“Read to a Dog” is offered for kids every Thursday. Please sign up for your time slot. It is a great way for children to practice reading aloud to the best kind of listener, a sweet, lovable dog.

Powell Library is open from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday to serve the community. Please follow the Powell Library and Park County Libraries on Facebook to find out what fun and exciting programs and resources we have for you!
