The Northwest College Music Department welcomes Brazilian multilingual singer, songwriter, and producer Luciane Dom to campus for a free concert on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Nelson Performing Arts Auditorium. For students and community members who wish to learn and experience more, a special convocation is also being held that same day at noon in the NPA Auditorium that is free and open to the public.

Dom is part of the new generation of contemporary artists from Rio de Janeiro who bring poetic themes such as black diaspora, feminism, empowerment and social reflections that impact the construction of her emotions. Her performances incorporate various musical influences from Afrobeat, to Urban Jazz, Reggae, and Ijexá, and are calls to action, inviting audiences to dance, sing and free their bodies. She has been featured at venues such as Brasil Summerfest at Lincoln Center and was named Rising Star of the Year by the 2022 African Entertainment Awards.

Possessing a history degree from the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, Dom’s multilingual educational work primarily revolves around master classes with a focus on the Afro-Brazilian Candomblé, and interactive classes covering traditional Brazilian rhythms including Samba, Bossa Nova, Forró, Axé, and Maracatu. She has already toured three times across the United States and Canada between 2018 and 2022.

Dom will be performing with her ensemble from Rio de Janeiro, composed of: Pedro Petrutes (keyboard), Davidson Ilarindo (drums), Pitter Rocha (guitar) and Felipe Lobo dos Santos (bass).
