Black bear forces closure of campsite

Lower water levels at Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area slowed the placement of facilities on Bighorn Lake. However, launch levels at Horseshoe Bend reached and surpassed the minimums last week. Both Horseshoe Bend, located north of Lovell, and the Ok-A-Beh Marina in Fort Smith, Montana, are now open.

The Ok-A-Beh Marina offers a variety of services, including pontoon rentals, fuel and a store. The Horseshoe Bend Marina offers food, non-motorized rentals, boat rentals and boat tours.

All docks are in at Barry’s Landing, Horseshoe Bend and Ok-A-Beh, while the floating comfort station has been placed in Devil Canyon. Park officials are waiting for water levels to rise in Black Canyon so those docks and floating comfort station can be safely installed. The Dayboard 9 boat-in camping site will be closed this summer due to black bear activity in the area.

“This bear showed some signs of aggression last year,” park officials explained. “Numerous sightings of the bear and her cub this year require the park to evaluate the situation in an effort to avoid any people and bear conflicts.”
