Bid awarded to clear scrap metal at landfills

Once again, Harris Trucking is set to clear the piles of scrap metal at Park County’s three landfills.

On Tuesday, commissioners unanimously approved the bid for the local company over that of Western Metals Recycling out of Utah. While the Utah company bid a higher amount, $165.49 per ton, Harris received a 10% boost to its bid by being not just a Wyoming, but also a Park County company, pushing them well ahead. Harris bid $161.50 per ton.

“Two years ago, they bid $141 per ton and we had 1,600 tons ... That’s a decent amount of money, we do pretty well,” Park County Engineer Brian Edwards said.

Travis Ball, the county solid waste manager, said they do this every couple of years after enough scrap metal is accumulated. Harris will start in Clark, clear that pile using magnets to get every last piece of metal, then move on to Powell and then Cody. Ball noted there should be close to the same amount of scrap metal to remove this time as with two years prior.

The company will have 90 days to accomplish it all once the contract begins.
