PHS wrestling whoops up on Cody, Lovell

Posted

Just over a month ago, Cody came into the Powell High School gym and spoiled the Panthers’ senior night. The PHS wrestlers returned the favor Tuesday.

At the Cody Triangular, the Panthers upended Cody and Lovell to build on their recent success.

“I have great respect for both programs, but it’s always nice to win against your rivals,” PHS head coach Nick Fulton said. “Cody spoiled ours, and now we spoiled theirs, so this was a nice one.”

Wrestlers opened the day against the Bulldogs, cruising to a 56-24 win. Seven of Powell’s nine wins came via pin, allowing the Panthers to build a sizable lead.

Then, PHS earned a 46-33 win over Cody. The Panthers are now 2-1 in duals against the Broncs this season.

With only one practice before the triangular this week, Fulton decided to bump his wrestlers up in weight, competing against heavier opponents. Despite this challenge, the Panther athletes handled it well.

“They took it in stride,” Fulton said. “We were pretty intense and aggressive, and that’s kind of a lot of what we’ve been preaching lately.”

But the week’s not over for PHS. The Panthers return to the mat Saturday in Buffalo for their last regular-season event, facing off against Green River, Wheatland and Buffalo.

While it’s a short turnaround, Fulton thinks the schedule will benefit his squad as it prepares for the postseason.

“We’re still in the building process, and we’re still looking to add a little bit here and there,” Fulton said. “The best is yet to come. We haven’t put our best team on the mat yet this year. That’s a great thing, and we’re excited.”
