Dear Editor:
I have lived in Powell for 37 years and have always thought that Powell folks are among the kindest people on the planet. We hold fundraisers for people who are faced with overwhelming medical bills. We contribute to food banks and Christmas baskets. We stop to help stranded motorists, even when we don’t know them.
So I am baffled by the unkindness of people in Powell who do not wear face masks in public places, like the grocery store or the post office.
Perhaps there is some confusion about the purpose of masks. Yes, masks go some way toward protecting the wearer from viruses. But their principal purpose is to protect the people around the wearer.
The pandemic is not over. COVID-19 is still spreading in Park County. Some people who are infected do not have symptoms. So you could be walking around with COVID and not even know it. Then you cough or sneeze or just talk in my direction and I could get really sick.
I do not need you to raise funds to pay my medical bills (yet). I don’t need help buying food (so far). My car is running fine (today). But I do need you to protect me from a virus that could kill me. I wear a mask in public to protect you.
Please, be kind and wear one to protect me.
Kathleen Bieke
