B team’s season concludes at state

The Powell Pioneers B team’s season came to an end at the state tournament last week. The early exit came a week after a recent hot streak, which included back-to-back wins over Cody.

A tournament-opening loss against Cheyenne Post 6 set the tone for the weekend. Despite the Pioneers opening up a 5-0 lead, Cheyenne scored seven unanswered runs and took control, winning 10-7.

Late-game miscues ultimately cost the team against Cheyenne.

“The first game we played a really good baseball game,” head coach Tyler England said. “We just made a couple more mistakes than they did, and it cost us.”

In the second game, Powell returned to its winning ways. The Pioneers stayed alive in the tournament, defeating Evanston 4-2.

Dalton Worstell pitched 6.1 innings and struck out five in a strong outing. Offensively, Dillon Payne drove in two runs.

But their season came to an end in game three at the hands of the Casper Crush 17U. The final score was 12-5, and it concluded a 13-13 season.

“We just didn’t play our best baseball,” England said. “We didn’t go out there flying like we usually do, and it cost us.”

Though the coach had higher hopes for the squad before state, he said he’s still pleased with the team’s overall performance this season.

“This is the best team I’ve ever had as far as pitching depth goes,” England said. “They just continued to get better. They didn’t go backwards once, and I think as a coach, that’s the nicest thing to see.”

England is also excited for the team’s future and the talented players developing through the system.

“We have a lot of really good guys coming up in this program,” England said. “All in all, the boys came together at the right time, played really good baseball. Hopefully it doesn’t fall away in the next eight months, and hopefully we pick up right where we left off.”
