Animal shelter closed to public, population increases

Posted

The City of Powell Animal Shelter is closed to the public during the coronavirus shutdown.

But still the numbers of animals at the shelter managed to increase dramatically in the last week. There were 12 animals — 11 cats and one dog — in the shelter on March 28.

That was before a party dropped off a cat. The next day the mother cat gave birth to seven kittens.

The kittens are in isolation until they have had shots and can be spayed or neutered.

Though the shelter’s doors are closed, people can still make arrangements to claim a pet that may have been brought in by calling 307-754-1019.

For people who wish to donate pet food, it can be left at the front door of the shelter.

Shelter attendants are at the facility twice a day, said longtime supporter and shelter advocate Elfriede Milburn with Caring for Powell Animals.
