Though Powell High School has seen some of its recent sporting events canceled due to COVID-19, the school’s administration remains optimistic about the winter season.
Most recently, PHS had to cancel its JV and freshman boys’ and girls’ basketball games against Meeteetse on Saturday, due to positive cases on Meeteetse’s end. A couple days prior, Powell’s JV wrestling dual invite in Cody, also slated for Saturday, was similarly scrapped.
Despite the recently-axed competitions, PHS Activities Director Scott McKenzie is “confident” every team competing this winter — boys’ and girls’ basketball, wrestling and boys’ swim — will complete their seasons.
“We have excellent protocol in place at both the state and local levels that will allow us to keep our athletes safe,” McKenzie said.
Only 100 spectators are permitted to attend PHS sporting events under the state’s public health orders, which were recently extended through Jan. 25. Masks are also required at all times for all personnel, except for competing athletes.
“We will continue to practice good habits and hygiene to start the new year,” McKenzie said. “We will review what has worked for us and move forward. We will follow the recommendations of our Park County Health Officer and hope that restrictions begin to ease up in the near future.”
Shortly after the 100-spectator cap went into effect on Dec. 9, Park County Health Officer Dr. Aaron Billin considered requesting an exception that would have allowed more people in the Powell and Cody high school gyms. However, State Health Officer Dr. Alexia Harrist said she would not consider any exceptions to the state’s orders until Park County moved into a lower risk category, leading Billin to drop the idea.
Park County School District 1 students return from winter break on Wednesday, and PHS athletics returned to action on Monday, with freshman boys’ and girls’ basketball games against Cody.
None of the Panthers’ upcoming sporting events have been canceled, though the boys’ and girls’ basketball games on Jan. 15 will now be against Shoshoni instead of Wyoming Indian, due to Wyoming Indian still being in Tier 3 of COVID-19 restrictions.
