Absaroka Mountain Thunder completes a successful competition season

Absaroka Mountain Thunder (AMT), under the direction of mother and daughter, Cindy Bjornestad and Tara Shorb, recently wrapped up what has proven to be one of their highest achieving competition seasons yet.

On Saturday, April 22, a total of 29 dancers from AMT’s competition teams traveled to Billings to compete at the Big Sky State Games Dance Sport Competition. AMT dancers competed in six categories, receiving five Gold finishes and two Overall Team High Score awards. AMT’s success at the Big Sky State Games qualified them to compete at Clog Nationals in Utah.

On Saturday, May 13, AMT Elite, Explosion, Express and Excitement competition teams competed at Clog Nationals at Lagoon in Farmington, Utah. Dancers on these four teams racked up 12 first place awards, one second place award, four High Golds, and three Overall High Score awards. They also received three Judges Favorite nominations and four of their dancers were named to the Junior All American Team.

Absaroka Mountain Thunder was founded in May 1999 by Bjornestad and Shorb. They recently celebrated their 24th year. What started out as an opportunity to earn a little extra income while sharing a form of dance that they both loved, has turned out to be a successful and long running organization. Over the past 24 years, more than 200 dancers, ages 3-18, have had the opportunity to compete and perform throughout the United States. From their beginnings in their garage to the studio they just moved into, the two could’ve never imagined such success. They attribute all of this to the amazing support they have received from the Powell community, and all of their dedicated dancers and family members.

Absaroka Mountain Thunder will culminate their 2022-2023 season with daily performances during the Park County Fair.
