A runaway: Girls track places 46 points ahead of second place Cody at L.A. Kohnke

Blustery winds mixed with overcast skies created an added challenge at Saturday’s L.A. Kohnke Invite. However, the Panther girls battled through the elements and ran away from the competition by finishing with 224.83 points — 46 points ahead of second place Cody.

Those finishing on top for the Panthers included: sophomore Waycee Harvey, who won the 100 in a time of 12.58; junior Sydney Spomer, who won the triple jump with a state qualifying mark of 33 feet, 3 1/2 inches; and senior Reagan Thompson, who won the shot put with a state qualifying throw of 34 feet, 8 inches.

“I think it was nice for Reagan [Thompson to qualify] at home her senior year,” Panther head coach Scott Smith said.

Freshman Catelynn Floy came in just behind Spomer in the triple jump, finishing one-fourth of an inch ahead of the qualifying mark by leaping 33 feet, 1 1/4 inches.

The Panthers’ 4x800 team of junior Anna Bartholomew, junior Megan Jacobsen, freshman Kinley Cooley and sophomore Brynn Hillman took first place. The 4x400 relay team of freshman Kenna Jacobsen, Bartholomew, Harvey and senior Jenna Hillman also raced to a victory.

Other top finishes for the Panthers included: Jenna Hillman finishing second in the 400 with a time of 1:02.29; Bartholomew placing third in the 400 with a 1:04.78 and third in the 800 with a 2:37.31. Additionally, Brynn Hillman took second in the 3200 with a time of 13:21.81, senior Abigail Urbach placed second in the 100 meter hurdles with a 17.53 and second in the 300 meter hurdles with a 53.60, sophomore Addy Thorington finished second in the high jump by clearing 4 feet, 5 inches, sophomore Lauryn Bennett tied for second in the pole vault by clearing 8 feet, sophomore Kenzie Ratcliff finished third in long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 8 3/4 inches, and junior Grace Coombs was runner-up in the discus with a throw of 92 feet, 9 inches.

The track season is quickly passing by, as the state meet is just over a month away in Casper in mid-May. Smith hopes to continue to see improvement from his athletes as they get more experience.

“I hope to see improvement from everyone, but I think the two major areas we will see improvement in are the conditioning and technique,” the coach said. “We have a short season, and it just takes a while to develop the endurance and muscle memory needed for these specialized movements.”

The Panthers were scheduled for two meets this week, but one in Laurel, Montana, today (Tuesday) has been canceled due to weather. The next meet is scheduled for Thursday in Worland. The Panthers will then take a small break before heading to Lovell on Saturday, April 23.
