Yellowstone's east gate opening with limited hours

Posted

Yellowstone National Park's East Entrance is set to open for the season at 8 a.m. Friday, but park officials warn that avalanche danger will close the road in the afternoon. Yellowstone officials say the road through Sylvan Pass — located just inside the entrance — will need to close from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

“Expected warm and sunny weather will create significant avalanche danger,” said an update from Yellowstone officials. “Conditions will be closely monitored and additional closures may occur.”

Visitors should still be able to get in and out of the park on its eastern side, however, as Northeast Entrance is currently open. That entrance, near Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana, connects to the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway.

In addition to the stretch between the East Entrance and Fishing Bridge Junction, the road between Canyon Village and Fishing Bridge is also scheduled to open to the public at 8 a.m. Friday.

Road information can be found on the park website at go.nps.gov/YellRoads. The map on that page, in addition to phone recordings, will be updated as conditions change. For the public road report call (307) 344-2117. For the administrative road report call (307) 344-7115.
