Splashing into the 101st PHS Alumni Weekend

Posted

Powell High School alumni dove right into the festivities on Friday morning during the Alumni Swim Meet at the Powell Aquatic Center.

With his name still on the wall for one of the fastest times in Powell history, Scott Lebruska of Fort Collins, Colorado, dove into the Powell Aquatic Center’s pool with his parents, Bob and Kay Lebruska, cheering him on in the stands just like they did 30 years ago.

Scott Lebruska still holds the Powell record for the 200 IM with his 2:04.15 set in 1985.

“This was my sport growing up, I hadn’t swam competitively for 30 years,” said Lebruska, a 1986 grad. “It’s fun, I still get butterflies in it (competing).”

Lebruska held the state record for the 100 butterfly for eight years, said Bob Lebruska. It was Scott’s parents who told him the swim meet is happening.

“It’s just fun,” Scott Lebruska said, noting he’d swam in the aquatic center a few times since it opened. “My stroke feels good, but I get tired faster.”

“It’s exciting, he hasn’t lost his touch,” said Kay Lebruska. “We’ve been to a lot of swim meets and it makes you proud — he worked so hard to get on the board and it helps kids strive for goals.”

Among the 13 competitors, six of which were PHS alumni, was Class of 1968 alumni Bill Cox who noted the turnout for this swim meet was smaller than the one held in the winter time.

“I guarantee I’m the oldest one here,” Cox said. “The turnout is pretty light — but this is just the first year.”

PAC co-director Tanya Bonner said they plan to make the swim meet a bigger event with more notice next year.

“We added it to the alumni weekend since there are a lot of swimmers,” said Jerry Rodriguez, a Powell swim coach and alumni who helped organize the swim meet. “It’s always a challenge, young guys are fast without training — but if older guys train and kept good form, they do well. You can swim your whole life and we’re trying to get more (people) into it.”

The following are the results from the Alumni Swim Meet which was held with several Powell youth from the USA swim program.

100-yard freestyle

100-yard IM

50-yard freestyle

50-yard butterfly

50-yard backstroke
