PHS grapplers dominate Buffalo, Worland

Set sights on Regionals this weekend at home

The Powell High School wrestling team closed out the 2018-19 regular season in dominating fashion Friday, winning duals against Buffalo and Worland at the Powell Quad meet.

“I thought we wrestled well — the win against Worland was really big for us, because they’ve beaten us the last couple of years,” said PHS head coach Nate Urbach. “We wanted to make sure we were ready to go for that dual and we were, which was nice.”

The Panthers will host the 3A West Regionals meet Friday and Saturday. Urbach said it’s a small but important tournament, as it determines seeding for the state meet the following weekend.

“You have to be ready to go for this one, for sure,” he said. “We have to do well in order for us to have our best opportunity come state time. We’re trying to get everybody firing on all cylinders this week, and ready to go into the postseason. I want us to wrestle to the top of our abilities, what we’re capable of, and maybe even extend past that a little bit.”

The Panthers have a handful of seniors in Reese Karst, Cole Davis, Cameron Schmidt, Duy Hoang and Sawyer Mauthe, who will be competing on their home mats for the final time this weekend. Urbach is looking forward to what the seniors will bring this weekend.

“They have really been doing a good job this year,” the coach said. “They’ve shown good leadership — good attitudes are probably the major thing they’ve brought to the team. That’s just so important in a wrestling room, and that’s what I’ve been most appreciative of.”

Panthers 75, Buffalo 3

At 106 pounds, Powell’s Colt Nicholson got the dual started with a pin over Buffalo’s Mason Myers, setting the tone for a 75-3 dismantling of the Bison. PHS teammate Emma Karhu followed with a 5-2 decision at 113 pounds over Buffalo’s Colton Briscoe.

Powell then rattled off four straight pins at 120, 126, 132 and 138 pounds, starting with Trevor Feller over Buffalo’s Dylan Fauber.

At 126 pounds, Michael Maddox, ranked No. 7 in 3A, pinned Buffalo’s Dallas Lopez. Lopez came into the match as the fourth-ranked wrestler in 3A, giving Maddox the upset.

“Michael Maddox had probably the performance of the night; he had a great performance,” Urbach said, adding, “He showed a lot of growth and maturity. I was really happy for him.”

Corey Linebaugh, No. 6 in 3A at 132 pounds, pinned Buffalo’s Robert Myers, while senior Reese Karst, the No. 1 wrestler in the state at 138 pounds, made short work of Buffalo’s Hunter Moe, pinning Moe in 53 seconds.

Cole Davis’ hard-fought 6-0 loss to Buffalo’s Clay Reiner at 145 pounds was the only blemish for the Panthers.

Powell’s Brody Karhu, ranked No.1 in all classes at 152 pounds, then pinned Benjamin Camino. At 160 pounds, Seth Horton, ranked No. 4 in 3A, pinned Buffalo’s Jace Skovgard in the second round.

Powell’s Cameron Schmidt pinned Quinten Williams in the first round at 170 pounds, and teammate Bo Dearcorn followed suit at 182 pounds, pinning Buffalo’s Triston Peer in the first. Schmidt is currently ranked No. 7 in 3A, while Dearcorn is ranked second at 182, just behind Cody’s Charlie Beaudrie.

Karson Lamb at 195 pounds, Carson Olsen at 220 and Duy Hoang at 285 all won by forfeit.

Panthers 43, Worland 18

Looking for a little payback for last year’s 43-16 defeat against Worland, the Panthers didn’t disappoint, beating the Warriors Friday by a nearly identical 43-18 margin.

Nicholson recorded his second pin of the night, sticking Worland’s Kyle Anderson in the second round.

Worland answered at 113 pounds, and Warrior Dominic Hartley showed why he’s the No. 3 wrestler in 3A at that weight, pinning Emma Karhu in the first round.

Feller had his second win on the night at 120 pounds, beating Worland’s Kein Anderson 7-2. Powell’s Maddox also won a hard-fought decision at 126 pounds, beating Adam Bankert 7-4.

At 132 pounds, Worland won its second match of the dual, as No. 3-ranked Daniel Weyrich beat Linebaugh 7-2.

Karst cruised to another win at 138 pounds, beating Worland’s Tristen Lungren by technical fall, while teammate Davis won by major decision 14-0 over Colton Woffinden.

Brody Karhu recorded another first-round pin over Worland’s Josh Rose. Worland won its final match of the dual at 160 pounds, as No. 5 Luke Goncalves upset Horton 7-0.

At 170 pounds, Schmidt won a close 2-1 decision over Worland’s Peyton Woffinden for his second win of the night.

“Cameron [Schmidt] looked good; I thought he wrestled well,” Urbach said.

Meanwhile, Dearcorn pinned Isaac Goncalves in the second round at 182 pounds and Lamb won a 13-3 major decision over Worland’s Brandon Haun at 195 pounds. Olsen received a forfeit at 220 pounds, and Powell’s Sawyer Mauthe, ranked No. 6 in 3A, won a 4-1 decision over Brody Hernandez to round out the meet at 285 pounds.

“I thought Sawyer Mauthe looked really good as well,” Urbach said. “He beat two tough Worland kids; their JV guy is real good too. He beat both of those guys and looked good doing it.”
