Though the standings don’t explicitly show it, Powell High School finished in the top three in All-Girl Cheer at the State Spirit competition in Casper on March 9 in Casper.
With only five Class 3A teams in the event, Powell competed among seven Class 4A teams and placed 10th overall, including third among 3A squads, with 45.833 points.
PHS head coach Vicki Walsh said the Panthers hit their peak at the season’s end.
“That’s always what your goal is. I just wanted them to go out there and know they did their best and gave their best performance,” Walsh said. “It always kind of amazes me … when they get to competition they really shine.”
The Panthers also finished 14th (49.167 points) in the Class 3A Cheer Non-Stunt event among 16 teams.
“We felt, as coaches, we should have placed a lot higher,” Walsh said. “The girls did a tremendous job. Once again, it’s just a subjective type of competition.
“But the girls just represent Powell in such positive way. They take a lot of pride in what they do. They were OK with it. There were no tears.”
Walsh said the Panthers entered the All-Girl Cheer event with a routine they believed would be to the judges’ liking, something the coach based off judges’ notes from previous years.
“We get the comments and we try to look at those and make adjustments,” Walsh said. “And I felt like we did that. Then you get the same comments again, so it’s frustrating in some respects.”
But Powell performed up to its own standard, and Walsh said there were no regrets in Casper.
The Panthers had just two senior cheerleaders all season, and just one at the State Spirit competition.
Walsh said the team’s youth was well-served by the trip to state.
“We had a very young team this year, not a lot of experience, so it was a really great learning experience for all of them,” Walsh said. “You spend a lot of time, when you have a young team, learning. We spent a lot of time learning and trying to get just the basics of cheerleading down. But in the end they really came around and they worked really hard and they did a great job.”
The Panthers cheer team remained in Casper during the Class 3A Wyoming State Girls Basketball Tournament March 10-11.
Lyman scored 71 points to win the Cheer Non-Stunt event, and Class 4A’s Kelly Walsh won All-Girl Cheer with 83.667 points.
