Panthers have strong showing in last meet

Posted

Members of the Powell High School track team posted wins and personal bests last week — and several athletes pre-qualified for state — in the final invite before the regional competition in Rock Springs.

Additionally, as a team, both the Powell boys and the girls finished first at Thursday’s Northern Wyoming Ophthalmology Trackstravaganza in Cody.

“Finally got a chance to get some good weather: nice, warm, not much wind,” said PHS head track coach Scott Smith. “Kids did a good job of getting out and doing a nice job in it.”

The PHS boys scored 310.5 points, followed by Cody with 191.5 points, Worland third with 26 points and Riverton fourth with 21.

The Lady Panthers, meanwhile, scored 224.5 points, besting Cody’s 213.5 points and four points from Worland.

“We still got some things to work on, we’ve got to get better in the next week or two, but they’re learning and catching on. It’s a young team,” said Smith. “We’re young and inexperienced and they are doing a nice job of figuring it out.”

The warm weather also helped the Powell tracksters get an understanding of the importance of staying out of the sun and heat — something Smith said they did well — as they prepare for the upcoming regional and state track meets; at those competitions, the athletes could potentially face eight-hour days in the sun.

Three of Powell’s relay teams qualified for state last week: both 4x400 meter relays and the boys 4x800 meter relay.

Maddy Hanks, Sabrina Shoopman, Natalie Dillivan and JuliaKay O’Neill ran the girls’ 4x400 meter relay and bested the field with a time of 4:21.43. O’Neill also pre-qualified in the 400 meter dash with a first place finish in 1:01.26.

In the boys’ 4x400 relay, Jay Cox, Mason Olsen, Paige Gann and Brody Karhu raced to third with a time of 3:35.86; the boys’ 4x800 team — comprised of Colin Queen, Cox, Jesse Erickson and Alan Merritt — finished second with a time of 8:44.81.

Merritt also competed in the 3200 meter run and cut 26 seconds off of his previous personal best, winning the race in 10:33.84. He just barely missed pre-qualifying for state in the event, which traditionally has the fewest number of pre-qualifiers.

Three other Powell runners cut time off their personal bests in the roughly 2-mile event: Dylan McEvoy cut 10 seconds, Jayden Yates knocked off four seconds and Jesse Erickson ran three seconds faster.

In pole vaulting, Garret Henderson finished second clearing 13 feet — 1 inch below his personal best. Karhu tied his personal best at 12 feet, 6 inches for a third place finish. Brooks Asher qualified for state with a fourth place finish leap of 12 feet.

On the girls side, Hanks tied her personal best at 9 feet, 6 inches for a second place finish.

The 3A West Regional track meet will be in Rock Springs on Friday and Saturday, starting at 9 a.m.

Coach Smith said the west side of the state is competitive and regionals will be tough.

“It’s going to be a great meet. It’s going to be a lot of fun and when we get through that, we will be well-prepared for state,” said Smith. The coach added that he “just hopes we can go out and get lots of PR’s and bring home lots of medals and get a lot of kids going to Casper the next week.”

The state track meet will be in Casper May 18-20.
