Panther football takes down Cody

The Powell Panthers scored on their opening drive against the Cody Broncs on Friday and kept the momentum going throughout the entire game, winning 47-21.

“First offensive series we march down there and score on one of the better defenses in the state, in my opinion,” said Chanler Buck, Powell High School head football coach. “And that kind of set the tone defensively.”

Quarterback Mason Olsen ran in the Panthers’ first touchdown with Brekyn Herd kicking the PAT. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-0.

Both of the Panthers’ touchdowns in the second quarter were also scored by Olsen. His third TD on the night came on a 49-yard run with 3:20 remaining in the quarter. Herd was also good on those extra points to make the score 21-7 at halftime.

Cody scored early in the third quarter, but T.J. Abraham blocked the PAT, making it 21-13.

PHS soon answered with an Abraham touchdown to make it 27-13 at the end of the third quarter; Abraham would add two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter — including a 47-yard touchdown run — to help put Cody away.

Josh Wolfe scored the seventh and final TD for the Panthers on a 44-yard run with 1:23 remaining, shortly after Cody’s final score.

“I had no idea that we were going to be able to come out here and run and be able to run the ball on these guys like we did,” said Buck. “That’s what was able to take control of the football game and it led to a couple big plays here and there.”

The coach said Cody was able to take advantage of a couple big plays.

“They were able to execute during those times, which good teams do, and kept them in the game for a little while,” Buck said.

A couple of these big plays included two interceptions in the first quarter and a 62-yard touchdown with 2:20 left in the first half. Cody scored its second and final touchdown of the night with 1:34 remaining in the game.

“Outstanding job of execution. Everybody played well,” said Buck. “The front five played as good as they have all year. Our offensive and defensive line were outstanding this evening. The younger kids did do a good job of stepping in there; they always do.”

Offensively, the Panthers had 499 yards and 20 first downs while the Broncs had 380 and seven first downs.

Abraham was the leading rusher with 182 yards. Olsen had 110 rushing yards and completed 6 out of 8 passes for 113 yards. Wolfe rushed for 54 yards and returned four punts for 32 yards. Carson Heinen had two receptions for 51 yards and Paige Gann also had two receptions for 47 yards. Herd had one catch for 9 yards and Kanyon Gann caught one for 6.

Herd finished 5-of-7 on PATs for the night.

For the defense, Eli Briggs had nine assisted tackles, Abraham and Nathan MaGill each had eight, Brooks Asher had seven, Max Gallagher five and A.J. Lewis four. Tackles for a loss included Asher with four, Gallagher with three, MaGill with two and Briggs with one. Abraham led in unassisted tackles with two and Jon Morrow, Asher, MaGill, Paige Gann, Kaelan Groves, Reese Karst, and Zach Meredith all had one. MaGill and Gallagher each sacked the quarterback once.

Powell will play Lander for the first playoff game on Friday night (see related story).

“Everyone is going to continuously evolve as the season goes on. As far as preparation goes, we are in a routine. It’s a Friday night home (game). Our track record at home has been pretty good so far,” said Buck. “It’s the playoffs; it’s a new season.”
