Panther and Cub tracksters succeed at double dual

Posted

Both the Powell High School and Powell Middle School track teams competed in Cody last weekend — and both teams saw success.

Two more PHS tracksters qualified for state on Saturday: JuliaKay O’Neill and Garret Henderson in the 800 meter run and pole vault, respectively.

Meanwhile, on the middle school track team, Sheldon Shoopman broke the seventh grade school record in the shot put and Emma Karhu tied Powell’s eighth grade record in the pole vault.

The high school was originally scheduled to compete in Buffalo, but the coaches from Powell and Cody later decided to instead host a double dual for both the middle and high schools; the high schoolers competed against Cody and Worland while the middle schoolers competed against Cody.

“I thought it went well. It was kind of nice to see our middle school kids, see what they’ve got coming up,” said PHS head track coach Scott Smith. “It was good for some of our kids, too, because we got some kids that are kind of nicked and sore and a big long bus ride to a long big meet might not have been the right thing.”

Added Powell Middle School track coach Dale Ann Meeker, “We just felt it was really motivating for our kids to get to see that next level.”

For team results, the high school boys placed first with a total of 127 points, Cody took second with 113 and Worland was third with 92. On the girls’ side, Cody came in first with 125 points, Powell second with 122 and Worland third with 47.

Coach Smith said he’s not worried about the team’s scores as much as he is about seeing the kids improving and learning.

“We know what we need to work on and the progress is in the right direction,” Smith said.

The high school didn’t have teams in all of the relays and some tracksters didn’t participate in all of their events due to soreness, injuries and other factors.

“We’re working through some of those injuries,” said Smith. “It was good competition and we got some really good times and marks in the field events; I’m happy with the way it went.”

O’Neill, a junior, qualified in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:26.95 and Henderson, a senior, qualified in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet 7 inches.

Colby Warner tied his state-qualifying high jump height from last week at 6 feet.

Maddy Hanks came close to qualifying in the pole vault while the girls 4x400 meter relay team finished one second away from a state-qualifying time.

On the middle school side of the dual, coach Meeker said that “we were extremely excited with our performances.”

“I don’t think you’re ever ready for the first meet, so we were pleasantly surprised,” Meeker said.

Shoopman broke the seventh grade shot put school record by throwing 40 feet and 0.5 inches. The previous school record had been set by Garrett Lynch, with a distance of 38 feet 4 inches.

Karhu tied the school record in the eighth grade girls pole vault with a height of 8 feet.

As teams, both the seventh and eighth grade boys teams beat Cody. The seventh grade score was 163-128 and the eighth grade score was 207-84. Both seventh and eighth grade girls lost to Cody with scores of 159-138 and 191-117, respectively.

This weekend, the Powell High School track team will host the L.A. Kohnke Invitational with about 10 teams competing. The invite will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Smith said the coaches from both Cody and Powell high schools and middle schools liked last week’s double dual.

“I’d love to run something like this early in the year again, because, for the middle school, it’s really good for them,” said Smith.

Invitationals allow no more than five participants per team to compete in each event, so the coach said it was nice for the middle school squad to get a chance to put kids in the events they wanted to do and for the coaches to gauge where the tracksters were.

Whether there will be another double dual in the future will depend on scheduling.
