Lady Trappers best Central on Sophomore Night last week

Posted

Northwest College’s Lady Trapper basketball team defended its home court last week — taking a 67-49 win over Central Wyoming — while falling 59-48 at Sheridan College on Saturday. That wrapped up Northwest’s regular season with an overall 14-16 record, but the squad is now hoping for an extended season and a berth in the Region IX Tournament.

Northwest 67, Central 49

On Wednesday, Feb. 22, Northwest played on its home court for the last time this year, coming away with a 67-49 victory over Central.

Head coach Janis Beal said it’s always good to get a win on Sophomore Night, adding that she was “very pleased with the effort and enthusiasm we had tonight compared to Saturday.”

“From the bench to on the court, just seemed (there was) more fun and excitement,” Beal said. “I think we kind of need to grasp onto that and continue on to continue to roll with that.”

NWC has four sophomores on the team — one of them, Maddy Johnson of Boise, Idaho, led the team with 15 points.

“She did a great job of coming out and playing hard,” said Beal.

Jessie Lessard, another sophomore from Yoder, led in assists with five while fellow sophomore Jessica Lohrenz had a team-best six rebounds — four on defense and two on offense.

The fourth sophomore on the team, Lauren Hinckley of Cowley, contributed two rebounds and an assist.

Freshman Kira Marlow cracked double digits in scoring 10 points.

As a team, the Lady Trappers shot 48.3 percent from the field and 27.8 percent on 3-point shots, outshooting the Lady Rustlers, who went 27.9 percent from the field and 25 percent from the arc.

It was a low fouling game, with NWC only getting to the free throw line six times (shooting 66.7 percent) and Central eight (87.5 percent).

Northwest forced 24 turnovers while committing only 20 themselves. The Lady Trappers stole the ball nine times.

The Lady Trappers dominated in every aspect of the game except for rebounds.

Central had 40 rebounds, split between offense and defense. Northwest only had 33, including seven offensive.

“We shouldn’t have been out-rebounded by that team and we were. To give up 20 offensive rebounds to any team is too many,” said Beal. “You give a team three and four chances, they are going to make one. I thought we could have done a better job on the boards for sure.”

Sheridan 59, Northwest 48

On Saturday, Northwest played the last game of the regular season by traveling to Sheridan.

“There’s not a lot to say other than we didn’t make shots,” Beal said. “I felt like we did every other aspect of the game (really well).”

The Lady Trappers out-rebounded the Lady Generals 33-32, forced 20 turnovers while only turning the ball over 18 times themselves and shot 84.6 percent at the free throw line compared to 66.7 percent by Sheridan.

Beal said the team moved the ball really well and got some good looks.

“The thing is, we were in the game too; we had a chance,” she said. “We cut it to five (points) or whatever and it was just a matter of, we didn’t shoot a great percentage.”

Northwest shot 25 percent from the field, including 17.9 percent from 3-point range; Sheridan shot 40 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from behind the arc.

“To hold them to 59 (points), it was definitely not the defensive side of things, definitely more of a offensive side (issue),” Beal said. “We got to relax and knock them down when we got shots.”

Dallas Petties was the team’s only double digit scorer with 10 points. Mattie Creager added nine and Charri McArthur scored eight.

Domenica Gomes and Lohrenz each had two assists while Gomes and Dani McManamen each had two in the steals category.

Eleven of Northwest’s 12 players got at least one rebound, with Lessard leading the team with five.

The Lady Trappers will play in Casper on Friday in a Region IX Tournament play-in game. A win will extend the season for NWC, as the win will advance the team to play in the Region IX tourney in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, March 9-11. A loss will end the Lady Trappers’ season

“It’s kind of a one-game season at this point, you got to prepare for that one and come ready to play,” said Beal. “It doesn’t matter what Casper did against us the first two (games), what matters is now.”

The game will start at 7 p.m. Friday at Casper College.

“Hope to extend our season,” said Beal.
