Lady Panthers take sixth, Panthers seventh at state track

Posted

Undeterred by the elements, the Powell High School track and field teams continued adding medals and accolades on the third and final day of Wyoming's Class 3A state track meet.

As a team, the Lady Panthers finished sixth with 53 points; the Cody Fillies took the top spot with 108.5 points. On the boys side, the Panthers picked up 39 points and finished tied with Lander for seventh place; Star Valley took home the team trophy with 140 points.

Saturday got off to a drizzly start in Casper and rarely let up, as athletes from around the state took to the track for the final time this season — some for the final time in their high school careers. The boys shot put was the first event on the schedule, with Panther sophomore Ryan Good finishing fourth with a toss of 45 feet, 8 inches. Good finished seventh in the discus on Friday.

In the girls’ 100 meter dash, junior Caitlyn Miner finished eighth with a time of 13.77 seconds. That went along with her fifth-place finish in the 100 meter hurdles. On the boys side of the 100 meter dash, junior Kaelan Groves finished seventh with a time of 11.92. Groves also made the podium in the pole vault, placing eighth.

Sophomore Sabrina Shoopman had the highest finish on the day for either team, taking silver in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 48.31. Shoopman added a sixth-place medal as part of the 1600 meter relay, along with teammates Brea Terry, Maddy Hanks and JuliaKay O’Neill.

“We just went out there and gave everything we had for the final event of the day. We just worked so hard,” said Hanks, adding, “It was a good way to end my high school career.”

The afternoon session began with the girls’ 400 meter dash and O’Neill took bronze with a time of 1:01.59. On the boys’ side of the same event, Brody Karhu finished fifth with a time of 51.53. Karhu participated in four events on the day, reaching the podium on each one: The sophomore had a pair of seventh-place finishes in the pole vault and 200 meter dash and ended his meet as part of the 1600 meter relay team, finishing fifth with Joe Rogers, Jay Cox and Groves. Karhu’s sister Emma matched her brother’s seventh-place finish in the 200 meter dash.

The Tribune will have much more coverage in Tuesday's issue.
