Helen Healy Bonine

Helen Healy Bonine, age 100 years, 11 months and 3 days old, passed away Aug. 3, 2018, at the Powell Valley Care Center.

Helen was born on a homestead near Sheridan, on Aug. 20, 1917. Due to family circumstances, her father placed the five children at the Cathedral Home in Laramie. She and her sister Eileen were adopted by Alex and Edith Healy of Worland, who also had two boys. She attended school in Worland and graduated from Washakie County High School.

Helen married Buren Bonine in 1934 and they were a couple for over 60 years. When Buren was in pharmacy school, she helped him study and could have graduated too.

In 1940, Buren and Helen joined her brother Dan in a ranch out of Volborg, Montana. They operated the ranch during World War II while Dan Healy was in Italy.

Helen was a partner with Buren in many endeavors in Miles City after the ranch sold. The biggest was the establishment of Western Pharmacy.

Buren and Helen were charter members of the Sage Riders Riding Club where she was vice-president and president. Helen also held all offices of Chapter K, P.E.O Sisterhood. She was also a member of Chapter A H in Worland and Chapter P in Powell. Her greatest accomplishment was the award she received while a Gray Lady for the VA hospital for her 3800 hours of volunteering in the library. In addition she was a member of the Soroptimist Club of Miles City.

Surviving are her daughter Kathalyn Bonine “Kay” Johnson; brother Robert Turner in Connecticut; 15 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 15 great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and daughter-in-law, Jane Bonine.

Preceeding her in death were her husband, Buren Bonine; son, Richard Clark Bonine, Sr.; son-in-law Robert Johnson; parents Alex and Edith Healy; sisters Eileen Horn and husband James Horn and Jean Coolidge; brothers Alex Healy, Jr. and wife Lorraine, and Dan Healy and wife Martha.

A viewing will be held Friday, Aug. 10, 2018, from 9-11 a.m. at Veile Mortuary, 301 South 8th St., in Worland. A graveside service will follow at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 10 at the Riverview Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Worland. Memorials may be made to Laramie Orphanage in Laramie or to the donor’s favorite fund. Arrangements have been entrusted to Veile Mortuary.
