26 tracksters qualify for state

Posted

Powell High School track team picked up three individual titles and more state qualifications at last weekend’s 3A West Regional Track Meet in Rock Springs.

Powell will send 15 boys and 11 girls to the state track meet this week.

“I was really, really pleased with how it went,” said PHS head coach Scott Smith. “We had some kids step up and, you know, they came through with not only some personal bests, but some big ones.”

Powell’s coaches felt the track team stepped even higher than their expectations in a lot of places, Smith said.

PHS’ Nate MaGill and Paige Gann took first place in both of the boys’ hurdling events — the 110 and 300 meters, respectively — while Julia Kay O’Neill won both the 400 meter dash and the 800 meter run.

As a team, the Powell boys finished third with 105.33 points, behind Star Valley, who finished first with 150 points, and Riverton, with 117.50. Mountain View took fourth with 102.

The PHS girls team finished fifth with 79 points. Star Valley also won on the girls side, again with 150 points, followed by Cody (99.50), Mountain View (90) and Riverton (88).

At the regional meet, the top eight finishers in each individual event and top four relay teams qualified for the State Track Meet in Casper, which will be held Thursday through Saturday. Athletes who previously qualified for state, but did not place in the top eight at regionals, still get to compete at state but they’ll enter their events with no seeding times, distances or heights.

Coach Smith said Powell had a lot of ninth and 10th place finishers.

“Boy, they came out and competed hard and I was really proud with how the kids came out and got after it,” Smith said.

Boys team

MaGill was the 3A West Regional champion in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.45 seconds; he also finished fourth in the 300 meter hurdles in 42.21.

Gann, meanwhile, won the regional title in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 41.37.

TJ Abraham finished fourth in both the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash with times of 11.17 and 23.01 seconds, respectively.

Gann finished ninth in the 100 meter dash, but previously qualified for state and therefore will compete in that event.

Gann and Abraham — joined by AJ Lewis and Mason Olsen — also earned a trip to state as part of the 4x100 meter relay team, which finished third.

Jay Cox and Brody Karhu finished fourth and fifth in the 400 meter dash with times of 53.48 and 53.71 seconds, respectively.

Cox finished seventh in the 800 meter run in 2:05.61.

Cox, Olsen, Gann and Karhu finished second in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:34.36.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Cox, Colin Queen, Alan Merritt and Karhu also advanced to state after finishing fourth in 11:03.19; Aidan Jacobsen will travel to state as an alternate for the relay team.

Merritt finished seventh in the 1600 meter (1 mile) run in 4:59.60 and third in the 3200 meter run (2 miles) in 10:54.40.

Four pole vaulters will represent the Panthers at state: Garret Henderson, Brooks Asher, Dacen Phister and Karhu.

Henderson tied for second place, clearing 12 feet, 9 inches; Asher finished seventh with a height of 12 feet, 3 inches and Phister finished eighth at 11 feet, 9 inches. Karhu previously qualified for the state meet.

Colby Warner finished second in high jump with a leap of 6 feet.

Zach Easum will be competing in two field events at state: long jump and discus. Easum finished sixth in the long jump, leaping 19 feet, 7.75  inches, third in the discus with a throw of 146 feet, 8 inches.

Olsen will also throw both the shot put and discus at state; he threw 47 feet, 9.50 inches in the shot put for a third place finish and previously qualified in the discus.

Girls team

O’Neill was a two-time regional champion running the 400 meter dash in 1:02.48 and the 800 meter run in 2:19.79.

Also qualifying in the 400 was Natalie Dillivan, who took sixth with a time of 1:07.90.

Sabrina Shoopman will compete in both the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles at state after fourth place finishes in both events at regionals, with times of 16.80 and 50.07, respectively.

Maddy Hanks finished second in pole vault, clearing 9 feet, 3 inches, and seventh in the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 51.57.

Hanks, Shoopman, Dillivan and O’Neill also will run the 4x400 meter relay after finishing second at regionals with a time of 4:22.51.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Rachelle Cole, Hailee Paul, Teo Faulkner and O’Neill finished fourth in 11:07.91 to qualify.

In the 200 meter dash, both Kady Wells and Caitlyn Miner qualified for the state competition, finishing third in 27.19 and seventh in 27.97, respectively.

Miner will also be competing in the pole vault. She placed seventh with a height of 8 feet, 3 inches.

Aubrie Stenerson finished fourth in the long jump to advance to state, with a leap of 15 inches, 5.50 inches.

Rachel Bonander advanced in both the shot put and discus. She had a throw of 31 feet, 2.25 inches for an eighth place finish in shot put and a 106 feet 4 inch throw in discus for a sixth place finish.

The State Track Meet starts Thursday at 11 a.m.

“It’s going to be a good one,” said Smith of the tournament. “Looking at the region results, it’s kind of what I thought it was.”

Smith said the west region has more depth in strong competitors, “but there is some outstanding kids on that other side.”

“We’re just going to be asking the kids to get out there and compete hard again, go for [personal records], get them prepared that it’s going to be crummy weather for everyone,” he said.

The weather forecast is for a 100 percent chance of rain on Thursday, a 60 percent chance of rain to snow on Friday and partly cloudy on Saturday.
