Wilkerson, Creed claim conference titles

It came down to the final event, but the Powell High School boys swim team held off hard-charging Lyman to place second in the 3A West Conference Championship in Riverton over the weekend.

The longest road trip of the basketball season proved tough for Powell High School basketball as both the boys’ and girls’ teams suffered losses to Mountain View on Friday and Lyman on Saturday.

NWC hosting NJCAA District Qualifier

On Saturday, five teams will compete in Northwest College’s Cabre Gym for the National Junior College Athletic Association Rocky Mountain District Qualifier. Wrestlers who place in the top three for their weight class will advance to the NJCAA National Championship in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Feb. 24 and 25.

Trappers struggle at home, on road

The first week of February was a rough one for the Northwest College men’s basketball team, as they dropped games at home against Casper College (74-58) and on the road against Gillette (101-76), with the Region IX Tournament looming on the horizon.

Poor shooting contributed to a pair of losses for the Northwest College women’s basketball team last week, as they fell 58-53 to Casper College on Wednesday, Feb. 1, and 65-52 to Gillette College on Saturday.

Rejuvenated Star Valley prevails Saturday

Snapping a six-game losing streak, the Powell High School boys’ basketball team upset Pinedale, 61-57, on Friday night in the Panther gym. Going into the game, Pinedale had an overall record of 10-5 and Powell came in at 2-10.

With wins over Cody and Buffalo last week — and a strong team showing at the Gillette Invitational over the weekend — the Powell High School boys swim team head to the regional tournament on a positive note.

Among the 47 teams that ventured to Riverton to compete in the Ron Thon Invitational, the Powell High School wrestling team placed sixth — and had four wrestlers place in the top five at the varsity level.

Trapper wrestlers win Apodaca

A win over Western Wyoming College in the Apodaca Dual Showdown Friday night at Cabre Gym was highlighted by a comeback decision from Trapper Cameron Braden in what NWC wrestling coach Jim Zeigler called “the most exciting match of the night.”

Trappers split two on the road

The Northwest College men’s basketball team survived a pair of tough road games to earn a split last week, defeating Western Wyoming Community College before falling to Central Wyoming College.
