Area players get tough for all the right reasons

Fans of roller derby in the Big Horn Basin had reason to celebrate Saturday, as the Heart Mountain Wreck on Wheels hosted its final home bout of the season against the Electric City Grrrlz at Riley Arena in Cody.

Some rough innings proved to be the Powell Pioneers’ undoing last week, as the Legion baseball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders against Cody and Lovell.

Powell High School graduates Danna Hanks and Lexee Craig both completed their freshman year of track and field competition at Dickinson State University with All-Conference honors while being part of the winning team at the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Chris Boucher — who played for Northwest College basketball team two years ago — signed a two-way contract with the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors Thursday night.

On Saturday, nearly a dozen Powell area residents competed in the 25th annual Bighorn Trail Run in Dayton among tough conditions.

Coming off a breakthrough win earlier this month, the Powell Pioneer baseball team dropped a series of games last week — including a couple by the thinnest of margins.

Two coaches from Powell High School — Ray Bieber and Scott Smith — have been nominated for the National High School Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year Award. The NHSACA’s National Convention is being held in Peoria, Illinois, this week with the awards banquet Wednesday.

Fifty-eight teams from around the country were represented at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper last week and the Northwest College men’s rodeo team took 12th.

Bott places eighth at CNFR

Powell’s Bryce Bott finished eighth in the nation at the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper (CNFR) on Saturday in tie-down roping — an improvement from a year ago, when he finished 16th.

Three NWC cowboys make finals at CNFR

Heading into tonight's championship round at the College National Finals Rodeo, Northwest College will have three cowboys competing in four events.
