Smartt hired as head coach for lady panther swim team

Bob Smartt has been coaching high school swimming for more than two decades, but he’ll soon be adding a new challenge: serving as the head coach of the Powell High School girls swim team while continuing to hold his head coaching position at Fairview High School in Boulder, Colorado.

 

On Monday, the Powell Little League Junior All-Star baseball team will host the opening round of the state tournament, playing Big Horn at 6 p.m. They’ll play at the juniors’ field, just west of the field used by the Powell Pioneers Legion team.

Continuing a tradition started in 1919, the four-day Cody Stampede Rodeo brought the top performers to Park County this past week — including eight reigning world champions across seven events. Between Saturday and Tuesday, more than 800 contestants competed in their respective events for the title of champion.

Richard Avoletta didn’t start competing in triathlons until the age of 50, when he set a goal of competing in one triathlon in all 50 states.

The Powell Pioneers baseball team won its second game of the season on Tuesday night, beating conference opponent Riverton in the team’s final home game.

Some rough innings proved to be the Powell Pioneers’ undoing last week, as the Legion baseball team dropped a pair of doubleheaders against Cody and Lovell.

Powell High School graduates Danna Hanks and Lexee Craig both completed their freshman year of track and field competition at Dickinson State University with All-Conference honors while being part of the winning team at the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Chris Boucher — who played for Northwest College basketball team two years ago — signed a two-way contract with the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors Thursday night.

On Saturday, nearly a dozen Powell area residents competed in the 25th annual Bighorn Trail Run in Dayton among tough conditions.

Coming off a breakthrough win earlier this month, the Powell Pioneer baseball team dropped a series of games last week — including a couple by the thinnest of margins.
