Another 1-2 finish for Powell track

Panther boys cruise to title at Worland

The second meet of the track season looked very much like the first. Powell’s boys destroyed the nine-school field, posting an almost 90-point margin of victory. The Panther girls placed second behind state power Cody.

Senior Kyle Sullivan led the way to the boys’ team title with three event wins for the Panthers. Sullivan cruised to victory in both the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles. He also captured the top spot in the high jump.

Classmate Drew MaGill also placed in three individual events for Powell. MaGill placed second in both the 100 and 200 meter races. He added a third-place finish in the long jump as Powell outdistanced its nearest challenger, Cody, by a 207-118.5 final count.

Lovell was the only other school to finish with more than 100 points.

Overall, though, the Panthers’ domination of the boys’ standings was a total team effort. A total of 21 different athletes scored points for Powell’s boys in the meet. The Panthers had at least one athlete place in the top eight in every individual event.

Powell also hoarded first-place honors in all three of the relays.

Josh Cragoe, Zander Andreasen, Danny McKearney, Bodie Friday, Cole Good, Jacob Beuster, Vince Sleep and Garrett Lynch all scored points in two individual events for the Panther boys. Cragoe and Andreasen each placed second in one event and fourth in another.

Four more events automatically qualified for the state meet for the Panther boys. MaGill’s 200 meter time proved fast enough to earn him a place on the Casper oval in May. Beuster added a qualification in the shot put, while Lynch earned a spot in the state discus field as a freshman after surpassing the qualifying standard with a heave of 136-6.

The Panthers’ 4x100 relay easily broke the standard needed to achieve a place on the track at Casper.

On the girls’ side of the ledger, Kendra Ostrom was the only Panther to finish in the top eight of three individual events. Ostrom’s performance was highlighted by a runner-up finish in the high jump and added a fifth place in the triple jump and seventh-place honors in the long jump.

Desiree Murray scored the only individual event wins for the Panthers. The junior once again outclassed the competition in both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, clocking a winning time of 15.94 seconds at the shorter distance before cruising to a time of 47.48 in the 300-meter event.

Marquette McArthur picked up an automatic qualifying spot for Powell in the discus, finishing as the runner-up in that event.

The Panthers also earned a victory in the 4x800 relay. Team members Wells, Morrow, MacDonald and Murray carried the baton for eight laps of the Worland track to cruise across the finish line in a time of 11:02.3.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday in Lovell.
