NWCA award comes on the eve of Poland depatureOver the course of a four-year prep career, Powell's Auston Carter accomplished almost everything and earned almost every award imaginable. So, naturally, it is time to expand the imagination. “It definitely came as a surprise,” Carter said, after learning last week that he could add the National Wrestling Coaches Association's Wyoming Wrestler of the Year award to his list of mat accomplishments. “I wasn't expecting it at all.”
Carter wrapped up a 159-27 career for Powell High School by becoming just the 13th grappler in state history to win four state titles. He holds school records for most wins, most pins (75), most wins in a season (48, tied with Trevor Donarski), most team points in a season (507), most reversals in a season (44) and most matches wrestled in a season (53, tied with Jessee Craig). Despite enduring an injury-riddled senior season, Carter finished the year with a 27-5 overall record.
Carter was selected for the wrestler of the year award by Wyoming's NWCA state representative. His name will be listed alongside the other state winners in the NWCA news and will also be archived in the historical section of the NWCA's website.
The honor comes just days before Carter is scheduled to fly from Wyoming to Poland for a series of friendly matches with various European wrestling clubs. Carter is scheduled to join a team of other wrestlers that leaves June 8 from Denver, Colo., to fly into Warsaw, Poland.
The group will spend nearly two weeks in Europe competing in a series of international friendlies, as well as sightseeing.
Among the stops on the group's itinerary are historic districts in Krakow and Warsaw, King's Palace in Warsaw, Wawel Castle in Krakow, the Auschwitz Concentration Camp and Zelazawa Wola, one-time home of the noted classical composer Chopin.
“For a while, I wasn't sure if I wanted to do it because I'd miss baseball,” said Carter, who also serves as the primary catcher for the Powell American Legion team. “I'm really excited about the opportunity to go to Europe, though.”
Carter's group is scheduled to return to the United States on June 19.
