Track regional tune-up

Panther track teams close regular season in Cody The Powell Panthers tuned up for 3A regional competition this weekend by capturing the boys' championship and the girls' runner-up honors at the Cody Trackstavaganza on Friday. For many on the Panthers' roster, it was the first competitive track action in nearly two weeks. Two new automatic qualifiers emerged from the cold meet. Senior Hannah Pollart earned a spot in the state high jump field. The girls' 4x800 relay team of Alyssa Rodriguez, Skye Albert, Brooke Nisley and Kassey MacDonald also surpassed the state qualifying standard in the event.

Both performances were noteworthy given the conditions.

“It was cold, but the wind stayed down,” said Powell track coach Scott Smith. “It was a great day to compete, but not necessarily put up great marks. The kids did a very nice job of getting ready for Regionals and competed well.”

The Panther boys stormed their way to another meet title, finishing 50 points in front of Cody in the five-team standings. Powell's girls finished 9.5 points in back of the defending 3A state champions from Cody.

Nisley captured the 1600-meter title for the Panther girls, pulling away over the final 150 meters from Worland's Shelby Sweeney for a five-second victory in a time of 5:51.91.

“That was an example of great competing,” said Smith. She stayed with one of the top runners in the region and then just blew her away on the final 100. It really sets a tone for her going into regionals.”

Smith also tipped his cap to the effort of Tess Mitchell. Mitchell, who had not run a race above 800 meters all season, found herself finishing second at 3200 meters on Friday.

Kendra Ostrom captured first place in the high jump, narrowly edging out Pollart and Burlington's Lyndsey Wardell. All three cleared 4'11”, however Ostrom took fewer attempts to reach that height, leaving Pollart and Wardell tied for second. Kassey MacDonald led a Panther-packed finish in the 800 meters as Powell took four of the top five slots.

On the boys' side, Drew MaGill (100), Zach Thiel (800) and Bodie Friday (3200) earned race titles. Kyle Sullivan swept both hurdle events and also was the only competitor to clear six feet in the high jump to win that event.

Also in the field events, MaGill scored a victory in the triple jump, surpassing the rest of the field by more than two feet. Andrew Young captured the discus title as the Panthers placed three competitors in the top five.

Powell travels to Jackson this Friday and Saturday to compete in 3A West regional track competition.

“It will be an interesting meet,” Smith said of the regional event. “We haven't seen much of the teams from the south, but judging from results, it looks like Cody will be the slight favorite in the girls. Our boys along with Cody would be the favorites. Regionals is a great meet because a lot of kids come from nowhere to do great, so you really don't know what is going to happen. It just makes it really a lot of fun.”
