Day two of the Wyoming State Track Meet is in the books, with the Powell High School track and field teams finishing another day of strong performances.
The sun shone brightly at Kelly Walsh High School for most of the day, though inclement weather caused a shutdown of the meet with a few events remaining on Friday’s schedule.
The day began with Lady Panther senior JuliaKay O’Neill notching a second-place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:19.29. Coming off an illness, O’Neill was battling congestion in her lungs, but was still able to compete.
“It’s my last 800 race in high school, so I feel pretty good about it,” O’Neill said after the race. “It’s been kind of frustrating; I’ve been having a streak of seconds [runner-up finishes] for the past year.”
In the boys’ 800 meter run, Panther sophomore Jay Cox shaved 3 seconds off his personal best, finishing fifth with a time of 2:00.26. Cox ran a slower-than-normal first lap but found his kick in the second, charging up eight places for sole possession of second place before being caught by the field in the last 50 meters.
“That first lap, it’s always tricky to figure out how to pace yourself,” Cox said. “It’s definitely easier with all of those fantastic runners out there. My first lap was a lot slower than I would have like it, but I’m definitely very happy about it.”
Panther thrower Ryan Good earned a place on the podium with a seventh-place finish in the discus, hitting a distance of 130 feet. In the triple jump, sophomore Dylan Preator finished fifth with a jump of 40 feet, 3.75 inches, while teammate Dalton Woodward finished seventh at 39 feet, 10.5 inches.
Junior Rachel Bonander was seventh in the discus with a toss of 105 feet, 10 inches.
Medalists for Thursday included Alan Merritt with an eighth-place finish in the 3200 meter run and Emma Karhu and Maddy Hanks, who tied for sixth in the pole vault. The 4x800 meter relay team of Sidney O’Brien, Hailee Paul, Hailee Hyde and Brea Terry also earned a trip to the podium with an eighth-place showing.
